The Genius Mess that is Pinkerton
Pinkerton is Weezer's most critically acclaimed album and is his most influential work. The album is considered one of the greatest albums of all time and has since been certified platinum by the RIAA.However,on release,it was critically panned(not really,it got average reviews).A readers poll by The Rolling Stone called it one of the worst albums released that year.
Weezer debuted with the Blue Album in 1995.The Blue Album was massively successful selling 15 million copies worldwide and sold 3M alone in the US.The singles Buddy Holly,Undone-The Sweater Song and Say it Ain't so were MTV hits.Blue was an album that had come out during the decline of the Grunge Era
However, the success of The first album had taken a toll on Rivers, who was drained out by the lifestyle of a Rock star. This followed by the excruciating physiotherapy that Rivers had undergone had made him frustrated with his own life
These frustrations take a life of its own in the album Pinkerton.
Pinkerton begins with arguably one of the most impressive openers in Alt history.Tired of Sex is a song in which Rivers expresses his frustrations regarding his sex life. The song feels like a drunk confession. It presents River's disilllusionment.
Getchoo is a song where River's disillusionment with himself is seen with a brighter light. The song rings a tone to BF Pinkerton, one of the main characters from the play Madama Butterfly.A cowardice man who cant keep up his promise resulting in the death of Butterfly. No Other one deals with a toxic relationship from which there is no escape and Why Bother is a song where Rivers speaks about his fear of rejection.
Across the Sea although a really creepy song(yeah creepy AF)opens up another persona of Rivers, loneliness. In fact,Pinkerton as an album is an ore with several traits that Rivers associates with.
The single El Scorcho,Pink Triangle and Falling For You acts as an interesting trilogy about Rivers and his various crushes
However, one song which really stands out for me is Butterfly, the final track. The track is a reference to the ending of Madama Butterfly where Butterfly kills herself .It kinda gets the point there.Rivers is playing Pinkerton,a cowardly rockstar who is seen as an idol by many(which he does not deserve)
Pinkerton wasn't really big on release. There are many reasons. The MV not being as interesting as the Blue ones, the songs being completely different from the Blue's Upbeat goofy tone.
But it's impact surely was.
